Nancy Sills (Chair) was a practicing attorney for 30 years, first working in the commercial litigation branch of the Civil Division of the United States Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., and then in private practice in Manhattan. She worked primarily as a litigator, focusing on cases involving contract disputes, fiduciary obligations, voting rights, not for profit corporations and securities fraud.

Nancy has volunteered in the school since its first year, working with children on reading and on drama projects. Nancy also serves as the liaison on the Board of Trustees with the outside counsel for the school.

Angela Howard (Vice Chair) is the Vice President of Real Estate and Facilities for Covenant House and was previously Managing Director for the Cultural, Health and Education Practice Group at Jonathan Rose Companies. She has over 25 years of construction management experience with particular expertise with educational, institutional and nonprofit institutions. Angela has overseen major renovations, environmental remediation, budgets and management of new construction projects for clients such as the City University of NY, New York Public Library, Columbia University, Corlears Schools, the United Nations International School and UrbanGlass.

Harold Elish (Treasurer) has worked as a financial planner and investment advisor to individuals and families for over 30 years. He has been concerned with educational opportunities for young New Yorkers for many years, having served on the Boards of a school and an educational summer camp. In addition, Harry is on the Board of the Kaplan Educational Foundation. He and his wife, Nora, live in Manhattan and have two grown sons.

Sarah DeBlois (Secretary) was a teacher in the Brookline, MA public schools for 20 years. She was a 3rd grade teacher; a part-time 3rd (math/science) and 5th (math) grade teacher; and spent her last five years as a Math Specialist for 3rd-5th grades. She was the Math League Coach for 4th-6th graders, where her teams were Town Champions 13 times. Prior to teaching, Sarah worked in business as a financial analyst (Polaroid Corporation), marketing (Star Markets), and in development (International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War). She is a passionate skier and is also on the Board of Trustees for Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports.

Michela Nonis (Trustee) was a Managing Partner at Competitrack Inc., a New York-based information services company she founded with her husband in 1987. As a partner she managed production, human resources and daily financial operations. She speaks four languages and has worked extensively as a translator. Born and raised in Rome, Italy, Michela came to the U.S. in 1978 to complete her education. She has an undergraduate degree from Princeton and received her MS degree in Education from Bank Street College in 2009. Since earning her degree she has worked as a reading specialist in private schools and volunteered in public schools as a tutor.

Dr. Richard Welles (Trustee) has over 45 years of experience in education, public and private, as a principal, staff developer, and English teacher. For several years Rick was a regional vice president of Mosaica Education, an Educational Services Provider. Rick has deep experience in leadership training and recruitment, having previously served on two middle school program and facilities planning committees for two other schools. He has also designed and implemented middle and high school blended learning curriculum and instructional programs. Rick served as Chair of the Board of Trustees of Academy of the City Charter School from 2010-2015 and is also the board chairman of the Open School Project. Dr. Welles is currently co-Executive Director of The New York City Coalition of Community Charter Schools (C3S).

James Traub (Trustee) is a journalist who currently writes for the website foreignpolicy.com. He spent many years working for The New Yorker and the New York Times Magazine, and has written for other leading publications. He is the author of five books on urban and international affairs and is currently writing a biography of John Quincy Adams. For many years he wrote about public schools as well as higher education; he now runs a tutoring program which brings professional writers to New York City high schools. Monica Khan- Liriano (Trustee) is the mother of a current fifth grade student (the third graduating class) at AoC. She has volunteered at the school for the past five years serving as fundraising chair, treasurer and president of AoC’s parent organization. Monica has been working in consumer insights and research for over ten years at top brands including Dow Jones, Citibank, The New York Times and currently leads the Insights team at Consumer Reports. Monica is an alumna of Prep for Prep, a non-profit organization that helps low income children prepare for and apply to NYC private schools. She received her B.A. in Latin American Studies from Barnard College and is currently working toward an MBA at Columbia University.
